Performing the Paradoxes of Paradise

In my video and performance work, I explore the dynamic interplay between visual narrative and embodied experience, using movement and time to delve into the complexities of paradise. These mediums allow me to create immersive experiences that engage viewers on both an emotional and intellectual level, inviting them to reflect on the multifaceted nature of the Caribbean identity.

Through performance, I enact and embody the themes present in my broader artistic practice, using my body as a medium to convey the tensions between beauty and hardship, visibility and concealment. The physicality of performance serves as a powerful tool for connection, creating a space where personal and collective stories converge.

My video work acts as a visual extension of this exploration, layering imagery and sound to create a temporal experience that mirrors the contradictions inherent in paradise. By juxtaposing serene landscapes with scenes and objects of opposing qualities, I aim to provoke reflection on the narratives we construct around beauty and identity.

In both video and performance, I seek to challenge the viewer’s relationship with paradise—inviting them to confront their assumptions and engage with the emotional landscape of the Caribbean experience. By intertwining these practices, I aim to create a rich tapestry of meaning that reflects the complexities of identity, memory, and belonging, ultimately revealing that paradise is not merely a destination but a lived experience fraught with contradictions and possibilities.
