Fragmenting Paradise – Small Mixed Media Explorations
In these mixed media works, I break down the concept of paradise into fragments, reflecting on how beauty, hardship, and identity intertwine in subtle and unexpected ways. These pieces are intimate yet layered, combining paint, collages, and other materials to explore the complexities of the Caribbean experience. Through these works, I investigate how paradise is both constructed and deconstructed—made up of shifting narratives, personal memories, and social histories.
Each piece serves as a visual conversation between opposites: abundance and scarcity, visibility and concealment, freedom and confinement. By incorporating texture and unconventional materials, I emphasize the tactile nature of lived experience, suggesting that paradise is not only seen but felt through layers of time, memory, and emotion. Mirrors, when included, invite personal reflection, challenging viewers to locate themselves within these fragmented narratives. The small scale of these pieces encourages close engagement, creating a sense of intimacy and inviting viewers to consider how individual perceptions shape collective understandings of what is seen as paradise.
With these mixed media works, I seek to explore the in-between spaces—where beauty meets struggle, where celebration meets sorrow, and where paradise is revealed to be both fleeting and complex. By working in this way I hope to evoke the nuanced realities of life in the Caribbean, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and engage with the contradictions that define this space.
