ABOUT

Gabrielle Moore is a versatile Barbadian fine artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans 3D conceptual assemblages, paintings, and installations. Her work explores the duality of the human condition both psychologically and physically, while delving into how thoughts and emotions shape our perception of reality. Drawing from her personal experiences, Gabrielle engages with themes of identity, mental health, and the search for balance in this complex world. Recently, she has focused on how history, race, culture, and everyday Caribbean life impact mental health and identity. Using the metaphor of paradise to represent the mind, Gabrielle disrupts this idyllic space with stark material juxtapositions, symbolizing the complexity of individual experiences. Her work reflects the tension between conforming and resisting in both physical and mental spaces. Through her art, she invites viewers to consider how our personal history, beliefs, and choices shape our perception of the world and our place within it.
In my work, I explore the balance between opposing aspects of human nature, against the picturesque backdrop of the Caribbean. I use the concept of paradise as a visual metaphor for the mind, while disrupting this idyllic setting with unsettling juxtapositions—both visual and material. Through these contrasts, I reference the region's complex history of slavery and its lingering effects on mental health, tourism, and culture. My mixed media works manipulate familiar objects and spaces, creating a duality that evokes both attraction and aversion. By altering textures, materials, and visual elements, I examine how these changes influences our perception. Additionally, I explore gender identity and the fragility of the human psyche through portraits that reflect different versions of the self. Using mirrors, I involve the viewer in an introspective dialogue on how history, emotions, and self-perception shapes our reality. These figures in my works often interact with one another, representing our internal discourse we experience, while making these private reflections public.Gabrielle Moore is a versatile Barbadian fine artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans 3D conceptual assemblages, paintings, and installations.
